The muscat family of grapes of the species Vitis vinifera are widely grown for wine, raisins and table grapes. They range in color from white to almost black, but almost always have a pronounced sweet floral aroma.
Several species of the genus Vitis, such as Vitis coignetiae Pulliat., V. flexuosa Thumb., and V. amurensis Rupr., are native to Japan. However, they have not been brought into cultivation or for breeding.

Vitis vinifera grape varieties were first cultivated in Caucasia in perhaps 6000 B.C. Cultivation progressed into Egypt and Phoenicia in about 3000 B.C. By 2000 B.C., viticulture reached Greece, and by 1000 B.C. it reached Italy, Sicily and North Africa.
