Several species of the genus Vitis, such as Vitis coignetiae Pulliat., V. flexuosa Thumb., and V. amurensis Rupr., are native to Japan. However, they have not been brought into cultivation or for breeding.
Although many species and sub-species of grapes are indigenous to Texas (10), early commercial production efforts in Texas failed for several reasons. Yields were generally less than commercially acceptable because of poor vineyard management and poorly adapted cultivars (9).
Vitis vinifera grape varieties were first cultivated in Caucasia in perhaps 6000 B.C. Cultivation progressed into Egypt and Phoenicia in about 3000 B.C. By 2000 B.C., viticulture reached Greece, and by 1000 B.C. it reached Italy, Sicily and North Africa.

In California, harvest date is determined by Soluble Solids Concentration (SSC) of 14 to 17.5% depending on cultivar and production area. In some situations, the SSC/titratable acidity (TA) ratio of 20 or higher is used to determine maturity for early maturing cultivars from early production areas.
